Not All Shingles Are Equal: Understanding Shingle Quality
Shingles may look similar from the street, but the differences in thickness, wind rating and warranty coverage are significant. Here is what separates a basic roof from a premium one.
3-Tab Shingles
A single flat layer with a uniform look. 3-tab shingles cost the least up front, but they are thinner, carry lower wind ratings and shorter warranties, and architectural shingles have largely replaced them.
Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles
Two or more laminated layers create depth and shadow lines that look much richer on the roof. They are heavier, more wind resistant and carry longer manufacturer warranties. Architectural shingles, like the Owens Corning Duration series, are the choice for most San Diego homeowners.
Designer and Luxury Shingles
Extra-thick premium shingles designed to replicate natural slate or cedar shake. They deliver a high-end look on estate and custom homes without the weight, cost or maintenance of the real materials.
Cool Roof and Specialty Shingles
Cool roof rated shingles reflect more sunlight, reduce heat gain and can help meet Title 24 requirements. For low-slope sections, our cool flat roof systems offer the same benefit. Algae-resistant shingles protect coastal roofs from dark streaks, and impact-resistant options add durability.
The Roofing System Underneath
The shingles are only one layer. Synthetic underlayment, valley protection, starter strips, ridge vents and matching hip and ridge caps all work together. Installing a complete, manufacturer-matched system is what allows us to back new installations with our 50-Year No-Leak Guarantee.
How to Choose the Right Shingle Color
Your roof is one of the largest surfaces people see from the street. The right color ties the whole exterior of your home together and adds curb appeal.
Match Your Home’s Architecture
Craftsman and ranch homes look great in warm browns and weathered wood blends. Modern farmhouse and contemporary homes pair well with charcoal and black. Coastal cottages often look best in soft grays and driftwood tones.
Coordinate With Fixed Exterior Colors
Paint can change, but stone, brick, stucco and window frames usually don’t. Choose a roof color that works with the elements you’re keeping.
Consider Heat and Energy Use
Lighter colors and cool roof rated shingles reflect more sunlight, which matters most in hot inland areas like East County and Escondido. Darker roofs absorb more heat, which good attic ventilation helps offset.
Check Your HOA Guidelines
Many San Diego communities have approved color lists. We’ll help you narrow your choices to what your HOA allows before you commit to a color.
See Samples in Real Light
Colors look different on a small sample than on a full roof, and San Diego’s bright sun can wash out lighter shades. We bring full-size samples and photos of finished roofs in the colors you’re considering.
Shingle Roof Trouble Spots to Watch
Most composition roof leaks don’t start in the middle of the roof. They start at transitions and penetrations, where installation details matter most.
Valleys
Where two roof slopes meet, water flow is concentrated. Valleys need proper metal or shingle detailing and should be kept clear of leaves and debris with regular roof maintenance.
Flashing at Walls, Chimneys and Skylights
Step flashing, counter flashing and skylight flashing are common leak points, especially where stucco meets the roof. These details should be replaced, not reused, when you reroof.
Pipe Boots and Vents
Rubber pipe boots crack in the San Diego sun and are one of the most common causes of small leaks. We replace them with every new roof and can replace them individually during a roof repair.
Low-Slope Sections
Shingles shouldn’t be installed on roofs flatter than a 2:12 pitch, and slopes up to 4:12 need double underlayment. Low patio covers and additions often need a flat roof system instead.
Ridges, Rakes and Edges
Wind lifts shingles at the edges and peaks first. Starter strips, sealed edges and correct nailing keep them down during Santa Ana conditions.
Attic Ventilation
Poor ventilation traps heat and moisture under the roof deck, which shortens roof life and can affect manufacturer warranty coverage.
Granule Loss and Algae Streaks
Granules collecting in your gutters or dark streaks on north-facing slopes are signs it’s time for a roof inspection. Water stains or active drips call for leak repair and water testing.
Why Choose an Experienced Roofing Contractor
An asphalt roof is only as good as its installation. Many premature roof failures come down to workmanship, not materials.

Asphalt Roofs for San Diego’s Coastal Communities
Ocean views come with salt air, morning marine layer and steady sea breezes. Roofs along the coast need materials and details chosen for those conditions.
La Jolla, Point Loma and Coronado
Salt air corrodes standard flashing and fasteners faster than most homeowners expect. On homes near the water we use corrosion-resistant flashing, drip edge and fasteners, and we pay close attention to the details that keep wind-driven rain out. In historic and architecturally distinctive neighborhoods, we help you choose roofing profiles and colors that fit the character of the street.
Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad
The marine layer keeps north-facing roof slopes damp for hours each morning, which encourages algae streaks and moss. We recommend shingles with algae-resistant granules and balanced attic ventilation to keep moisture from building up under the roof deck. Many coastal North County neighborhoods have HOA or architectural review guidelines, and we provide the product specifications and samples you need for approval.
Oceanside and Coastal North County
Coastal homes from South Oceanside to the neighborhoods above the harbor see steady onshore winds. Properly installed starter strips, sealed shingle edges and the manufacturer’s nailing pattern keep shingles in place when the wind picks up.
Imperial Beach, Bonita and Eastlake
South Bay homes sit between the ocean breeze and inland heat. In Imperial Beach, Bonita and Eastlake Chula Vista, we match shingle and ventilation choices to each home’s exposure so the roof performs year round.
Roof Replacement for North County’s Premier Neighborhoods
Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Del Mar Mesa and Carmel Valley are home to some of the most distinctive houses in San Diego County. A roof on a home like this needs to look as good up close as it does from the street.
Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch and Del Mar Mesa
Estate roofs often include steep pitches, multiple valleys, dormers and long ridge lines. Premium designer shingles add the depth of wood shake or slate without the upkeep, and our crews take the time to detail every valley, dormer and wall transition. Many estate communities require architectural review approval for roofing changes, and we help prepare the specifications and samples for your submittal. For Spanish and Mediterranean estates, we also install clay and concrete tile roofs.
Carmel Valley, 4S Ranch and Rancho Bernardo
Planned communities often have HOA-approved color palettes and product lists. We work within those requirements, help coordinate approvals and keep your neighbors in mind with organized job sites and daily cleanup.
Poway, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Peñasquitos
Inland neighborhoods see hotter summers and Santa Ana wind events. Class A fire-rated shingles, sealed ridge caps and proper attic ventilation help protect your home and keep upstairs rooms cooler.
Escondido, San Marcos and Vista
Inland North County summers are hot, and in inland climate zones California’s Title 24 energy code can require cool roof rated shingles when you reroof. We’ll tell you exactly what applies to your home and help you choose a compliant color you’ll be happy with.
East County and Backcountry Reroofing
Diamond Roofing is based in El Cajon, so East County is home. Alpine, Mount Helix, La Mesa, Santee, Lakeside, Jamul and Ramona see some of the hottest summers and strongest Santa Ana winds in the county, and roofs here have to be built for both.
Heat and UV Exposure
East County summer temperatures regularly reach triple digits, and roof surfaces get much hotter. Heat breaks down underlayment and sealants over time. Quality synthetic underlayment, balanced attic ventilation and cool roof rated colors help your roof last and can lower cooling costs.
Wildfire Areas
Many East County and backcountry homes sit in designated fire hazard severity zones where a Class A fire-rated roof is required. Fiberglass asphalt shingles can achieve a Class A rating, and we pay close attention to ember-resistant details at vents, eaves and ridges.
Santa Ana Winds
Strong, dry east winds test every roof edge. We install starter strips at the eaves and rakes, follow the manufacturer’s high-wind nailing pattern and use matching hip and ridge caps.
Ramona, Alpine and Rural Properties
Larger properties, long driveways and steep hillside lots are no problem for our crews. We plan material delivery and staging around your property so the job runs smoothly from tear-off to cleanup.
